Choosing logic and reason over superstition
This is in response to two videos by TheraminTrees, addressing his personal transition to atheism.
The earliest seeds of my transition were sown in very early youth. I came into consciousness during Americas race to get to the moon. At that time science was king of the American classroom. There was an urgency to produce the next generation of mathematicians and engineers to keep us ahead of the Soviets. Children who did well in the sciences were being rewarded with accelerated learning programs and scholarships, and it was impressed upon us that academic excellence was our patriotic duty. The quality of education available to American public school-children during those years was excellent, and I was profoundly lucky to have been one of those urgently educated kids.
Early in life I was exposed to a healthy spectrum of perspectives regarding religion vs. science my mother is deeply xtian, but defers to obvious scientific realities, while my father was a man of science, who never mentioned any thought about religion.
I am the fourth of five boys, all born 2 years apart, and all taking after our father in adopting a practical and scientific approach to life. My oldest brother would sometimes present riddles or problems to solve, along with a set of possible solutions. It would be up to us to determine which solution worked best, or whether any worked at all. As a consequence, I became accustomed at a very early age to reflexive curiosity, logic, counterintuitive thinking, and rational examination of the available evidence.
One day when I was 8 my 3rd grade teacher announced that she was obligated to teach us that there are other religions besides ours. Before that day, I had only the vaguest awareness that there even were other religions in the world.
What she told us next set off something of an epiphany for me. She explained in very condescending terms that there were actually many different religions in the world, and how they all believe in different gods. She explained that other religions all believed their god was the only god, and that other religions were wrong. She went on to say (in a reassuring tone) of course we know that god sent his only son Jesus to prove that ours is the only real god."
Here the riddles presented by my brother played an important role in guiding my approach to resolving the discrepancy I saw.
I knew that logically, these many conflicting religions which claimed to worship the only real god could not possibly all be correct, but that it was possible for all of them, including mine, to be wrong. On that day, I chose none of the above as the most likely correct answer to the question of which religion was the right one.
I believed there was a god, but that religions all had it wrong, because humans simply werent capable of knowing god.
The rest of my transition took 8 more years, but similarly happened very quickly, and as a result of rational thought, and the application of logic.
When I left home at 16, I met my first hard atheists. I soon realized that I had continued to hold a belief that there might be a god only because the matter simply hadnt ever been important enough for me to bother thinking about. Literally the first time I ever had cause to actually think about it (upon overhearing an argument between an atheist and a xtian) I immediately realized the utter pointlessness and danger of maintaining beliefs in imaginary, or unverifiable beings.
I am reasonably middle-of-the-road in my atheism - I am not as militant as I sometimes think I ought to be, but I have been open about my views in all aspects of my life. Family, friends, and co-workers all know that I find the sciences to be our best means of comprehending reality. They know that I hold no belief in any gods, and would like to see society hold the religions of the world responsible for their various impediments to human progress.
Finally, lest anyone worry about my mother, I call her a common sense xtian and this would describe all of the good people whom I love, value, and care deeply about - friends and family who still hold on to some portions of their xtian beliefs. They know I have no problem with their beliefs, as long as they keep said beliefs to themselves!
