Produced by Steven A Williams at thechapelstudios.co.uk in London
Part-time singer/songwriter and full-time All Black fan, London based Kiwi Bryce Taylor has composed an anthem for the All Blacks, inspired by the momentous occasion of the Rugby World Cup 2011 being held in New Zealand.
Bryce, who has performed at All Black post match functions in the UK, composed Men in Black to commemorate the event and encouraged by the hugely positive reaction the song received at his London pub gigs, decided to go the next step and record the song.
His vision was to produce a typically NZ sound with a harmonious blend of voices with a strong Maori/Polynesian thread running through and accompanied only by acoustic guitar and traditional drums.
Bryce's first call was to 'Manaia' a London based company specialising in Maori performing arts and cultural knowledge and through Manaia Bryce hooked up with fellow Kiwis Vai and Tama, who were both based in London playing semi-professional rugby.
Vai and Tama, are both members of Ngati Ranana, a Maori club located in NZ House, Piccadilly, which aims to provide UK based New Zealanders and others interested in Maori culture, an environment to teach, learn and participate in Maori culture
For female harmony Bryce enlisted his daughter Olivia Scott -Taylor who trained at the famous BRIT (British Recording Industry Trust) performing arts school in London. Olivia, who spent much of her early childhood in NZ, now stars in her third season of the UK's top rated drama 'Wild At Heart' which sees her filming on location in South Africa for six months of the year.
Bryce then approached Steven A Williams - owner, producer/engineer and composer at the famous Chapel Recording Studios in Wimbledon, London and one of the UK's most experienced and talented music industry people to produce the song. Steve has been producing music for television, scores for Hollywood films and working with famous artists such as Britney Spears, Eric Clapton, Sting and Seal for the last 20 years.
In line with Bryce's vision of a big, rousing, memorable sound it was in to Chapel Studios for the recording process to take place.
The first track down was Bryce's guitar and voice. Vai and Tama were given total freedom to interpret Bryce's Haka chant concept and Olivia provided the female harmonies which come in over the top at the finale.
The desired percussion sounds were achieved by Steve playing a huge war drum and 'hot-rods' on a brown paper bag on top of a conga drum. In keeping with the guitar being the only modern instrument, Tama's magnificent baritone voice became the bass sound.
The chant translates to being watchful and alert; about ones journey already being marked out; about the waka "moving forward onto the wave". It is about unity, about people being bound together to achieve a desired goal.
Men In Black is designed to be played loud - and The Canz hope, in their small way, that Men In Black is one of the things that helps bring Kiwis together as a united force in supporting the All Blacks for the 2011 World Cup.
