It's another song from a piece of musical theatre I'm working on. Ron captures the feel of the genre so precisely that if I close my eyes I can see him singing, on-stage. Genius!
The show is set in the period 1941-45 in a war-torn U.K. In the first scene (1941), a 12 yr old Jonny Jones bids farewell to his naval captain father, before John Jones snr goes off to serve on the North Atlantic convoys. Some months later his father is reported 'missing in action', after his ship is torpedoed.
Jonny takes the news badly and his schoolwork & behaviour begin to suffer. He is eventually expelled from school, but given a second chance with a place on a tough naval training ship, moored on a river near London.
In this song, we see a 16 yr old Jonny, near the end of his time at the school, thinking about his future. The scene takes place on a sunny morning, with the boys all taking advantage of a dry day to scrub their canvas hammocks on- deck. When the Bosun is out of sight the boys enjoy some horseplay, dancing with their long-handled scrubbing brushes (just think of Dick Van Dyke and his 'Old Bamboo' routine)
Back-story:
Training ships like these were run by the Shaftesbury Homes charity. De-commissioned transatlantic clippers were converted to house and educate boys aged 13-16.
In 1975, when I was a photography student, I was lucky enough to be invited aboard one such ship, The Arethusa, before she was retired & towed to America - returning to her original name of The Peking. The Peking is currently docked at the South Street Seaport, in New York City, where she acts as a maritime museum,
The ship made a strong impression on me. The hold had been converted to a full-size gymnasium where my fellow student-photographers and I had a great time swinging on the ropes. There were classrooms and a washroom on the upper decks and the boys slept in hammocks, somewhere below. It must have been very dank, dark & cold in winter & hot and airless in summer.
Some old-boys rose to high positions in British Society, following their time aboard. One-such is the current headmaster of prestigious Rugby School, in the U.K., the setting for 'Tom Brown's Schooldays'. Quite an achievement !
There is plenty of information on-line about the Arethusa, and the old-boys speak with some affection of their time aboard their historic sailing-ship school, and temporary home.
P.S. The 'wish-list' from Jonny Jones, at the beginning of the song, was loosely based on my own 'I Want' page which I wrote in my journal at the time of my visit.

Strangely enough, on reading the list again after so many years, I realised that some 'wishes' had been accomplished. I remember riding a HUGE horse, whilst on holiday in Tunisia. I learned to sail and had several enjoyable weekends aboard ocean-going yachts, on The Solent.
Alone, and with my wife, I've enjoyed holiday adventures in Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt. In Egypt, we were invited to lunch by our Arab guide, at his family home, set amongst the ancient tombs and overlooking the Nile, a few steps from the Temple of Ramesses III !
Happy & 'at-peace' ? Well . . that tends to come with age, with any luck ;]
